Postseason History[edit | edit source]
Season | Opponent | Result | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
2017-18 | Vancouver Blazers | L | 348.25-322.75 | With Ben Bishop and Pekka Rinne scheduled to play every other night, the Arenas were in line to get seven goalie starts that week. However, Ben Bishop was injured on Monday night, and Kari Lehtonen, Bishop's unquestioned backup was not available. Lehtonen had been picked up at the end of the season by the Los Angeles Sharks in a big-brained move by GM Gerrard to get a goalie keeper. Gerrard ultimately kept Philip Gubauer, one of the 9 goalies on his roster at the end of the season, who would go on to win 8 games in 17 appearances for the Sharks the next season. This absurd strategy to hoard useless goalies and ice an incomplete roster led to the birth of the "L.A. Rule". Kari Lehtonen would go on to have a productive week in three starts - had he been available to the Arenas, Toronto would have won the playoff game against the Blazers |
2019-20 | Springfield Indians | W | ||
2019-20 | Montreal Wanderers | L | ||
2021-22 | Seattle Metros | W | 491.25-353.75 | At a noted goaltending disadvantage on paper heading into the matchup, the Arenas were able to overcome this weakness thanks to volume (5 starts to Seattle's 3) and two heroic performances from Logan Thompson, who had two wins (including one shutout) while filling in for Arenas (and VGK) goalie Robin Lehner. The Arenas also relied on their depth at the skater positions, having 12 skaters produce over 20 fantasy points in the week (Seattle had only 5 skaters, despite Alex Barkov's 61.50 point week). |
2021-22 | Springfield Falcons | W | 470.25-429 | The Arenas knocked off their rival Springfield for the second time in the playoffs, thanks to big weeks from Kreider, Tkachuk, Reinhart, Panarin and Barbashev (all over 35 points) and key roster decisions (Joseph, Leddy and Paul picking up double digit points off the waiver wire). The Falcons would make things closer on Sunday, outscoring the Arenas 110.75-26.25 (including 15+ point performances from Middleton, Spurgeon and Hintz) but ultimately fell short. |
2021-22 | St. Louis Eagles | W | 472.5-366 | The Arenas won the first Cam Ward Cup in franchise history, with a performance for the ages against the favoured Eagles, who had bought heavily at the deadline. Matthew Tkachuk led the way with 47.5 points and the Arenas vaunted Big D rose to the occasion, with Makar, Hedman and Reilly all contributing over 30 points. Aside from those names, the Arenas depth was again the story, with 13 other players contributing between 15 and 30 points (not to mention Morrissey and Byram with 14.75 each). |
